StudiumLab is a multidisciplinary open lab for  humanities dedicated to research and technological experimentation in the field of sound, voice, audiovisual, performing arts and the processing and analysis of aural sources.

The laboratory is proposed as a technological infrastructure of reference for scientific disciplines working on the analysis and preservation of aural data corpora (experimental phonetics, ethnolinguistics and dialectology, ethnomusicology, musicology, organology, acoustics), for disciplines interested in technological and performative experimentation in the field of sound and audiovisual languages and for professionals working in different sectors of the industry of voice automation, audiovisual and live entertainment (synthesis and voice recognition, preservation of audio media, multimedia, videogames, cinema, video, performance and live entertainment, multimedia events).

StudiumLab has been realized by the Department of Humanities with the contribution of Compagnia Sanpaolo and University of Turin.

StudiumLab offers itself as a privileged partner to accommodate external projects by engaging in collaborations with the vast network of institutions and individuals in the area who wish to

   1) integrate humanistic and artistic skills with the use of new technologies

   2) share research infrastructures of excellence

The laboratory creates a common infrastructure for the needs of different disciplines, allowing for more effective collaboration on methods of audiovisual data collection in the field and in the studio.

StudiumLab is designed to meet the technological needs common to multiple disciplines, operating as a centralized facility to:

  • experiment with the languages of video in the areas of film and video production and in the exhibition, art and corporate sectors;
  • develop new languages related to digital cinema, music video, innovative formats for television, video art, the use of video for the web, interactivity, the development of video games, video installations and video scenery for dance performances and theater and multimedia installations for fairs and conventions, live management of images through the practices of so-called vjing, mapping and urban screening;
  • preserve and digitize corpora of ethnolinguistic and ethnomusicological interest and provide a platform for their use;
  • share specific know-how of each sector involved in the field of processing and treatment of research data;
  • establish stable collaborations between staff currently located in different structures;
  • experiment with new technologies for the use of sound space in the context of performance;
  • propose itself as a technological reference for artistic productions in the area that intend to work in a complex way with the sound interaction in the field of "physical computing".
