Research activities
The research activities of the staff members of the Section fit – both ideally and materially – in Turin's illustrious tradition of Italian Studies, in continuity with the policies that have historically marked the studies of a school that boasts masters like Arturo Graf, Vittorio Cian, Carlo Calcaterra, Ferdinando Neri, Giovanni Getto, Marziano Guglielminetti. Next to the critical, philological, hermeneutic and historical exercise on texts, genres, forms and structures of literary expression, the Italian Studies in Turin adopt – as they always have – a stance of constant openness to new methodologies, towards theoretical reflection and experimental investigation, towards interdisciplinary and comparative analysis, in the belief that literature – so much in its essence as in its cognitive, civic and educational value – can be both a witness and a militant activity, because it is indissolubly bound to the culture of a certain historical period, an environment, or a civilisation. The studies focus on the entire lifespan of the History of Italian Literature, from its origins to modern times. In those areas and sectors where the interests have become more concentrated and consolidated over the years, the research carried out by Turin's Italian Studies researchers undoubtedly constitutes a reference on a national and international level.
The achieved levels of excellence have been highlighted by the recent 2004-2010 VQR (Valutazione della qualità della ricerca – Research Quality Assessment), carried out by the ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del sistema Universitario e della Ricerca - Agency for the National Evaluation of Research and University) (in the Scientific Universities Ranking, the University of Turin is placed eighth (out of 35) for SSD L-FIL-LET/10 (Italian literature) and sixth (out of 10) for SSD L-FIL-LET/11 (Italian Contemporary Literature): cf. http://www.anvur.org/rapporto/files/Area10/VQR2004-2010_Area10_Tabelle.pdf
